IE7, removeChild and SSL

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

We recently launched some items into an environment and an JS bug appeared when deleting a DIV. The bug is slightly difficult to debug in that all versions of IE are especially “blind” when it comes to error handling. Here’s the criteria:

  • page is being requested in mode
  • div has a background image in the form url(/path/to/image.extension)
  • the use of the removeChild function

Any time the specific div gets removeChild’d AND it contains a background css style, IE will prompt the user the page contains non-secure elements right before it gets removed.

To get around this, delete the background css style before calling the removeChild function. has also released two alternate fixes.

Microsoft Silverlight

Tuesday, May 8th, 2007

Silverlight is a cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in for delivering the next generation of .NETbased media experiences and rich interactive applications for the Web.

My question is, will adoption occur like past products has released? (Netscape to IE, Wordperfect to MS Office etc.) Only time will tell…

New typefaces from Microsoft

Saturday, February 17th, 2007

I just viewed an interesting video from Channel 9 about the history behind typefaces from ’s point of view. The video is about 1hr long and features a brief(well not really) history of for the computer screen.

The video also deals with the new suite of fonts being released and one new font that stands out is Consolas. It is primarly geared to be a replacement to Courier (probably the most popular and widely used font by programmers) and have to admit it looks, works and is very easy on the eyes.

Being that most fonts are almost always designed for print, I have to give MS props for thinking about programmers and releasing fonts specifically for us.

Sites bow to Microsoft’s browser king

Wednesday, July 31st, 2002

While competition appears to be piling up, would-be IE rivals must overcome industry inertia that runs deep within the fabric of how Web pages are put together. Not least, they rely on the cooperation of skeptical Web authors who see little reward in supporting technology that is used by just a small fraction of their customers.
